The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the most popular and only route with hut accommodations, making it a comfortable option for climbers. This route offers a gradual ascent and is considered one of the easier paths to the summit, although it provides less time for acclimatization than other routes. Over six days, you’ll traverse lush rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, culminating in the ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Itinerary


Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Begin your journey at Marangu Gate, trekking through dense rainforest to reach Mandara Hut at 2,720 meters. The path is well-defined and scenic, with opportunities to see colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Continue through the rainforest and transition into the moorland zone. The trail offers stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Reach Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters for overnight rest.

Day 3: Horombo Hut Acclimatization Day
Spend the day at Horombo Hut to acclimatize, taking a hike to Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Hut. This day is crucial for adjusting to the altitude, improving your chances of reaching the summit.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Hike across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, entering the alpine desert zone. Arrive at Kibo Hut at 4,703 meters, where you’ll prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Embark on the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, starting at midnight. Reach Gilman’s Point and then proceed to the summit at 5,895 meters. Enjoy the breathtaking sunrise before descending back to Horombo Hut for rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Complete your descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates and return to Arusha/Moshi, celebrating your successful climb.
